The Image of Jan Hus in the Early Modern Czech Literature

The work The Image of Jan Hus in the Early Modern Czech Literature tries to map different ways of description of this Czech preacher in selected literary texts from 15th to 18th century, to capture the changes which his image underwent. The chosen authors come from different countries and use different languages, represent different environments, social classes and opinion groups, they also have different education and religion. Individual literary works were assessedby means of comparing the key episodes that are either repeated in the texts, or the author intentionally did not use them. To understand the image of Jan Hus as a whole, also contemporary iconography was taken into account , which in some cases has been taken from other literary texts than those which were compared, so that the image of Hus whereas complete as possible. The comparison of the texts and iconography showed, how accurate the observation of the described scheme was and how the image of Jan Hus was gradually changing. The combination of written and iconographic material from specific time intervals allowed us to observe the gradual change of conceptions of the personality of Jan Hus and events connected with him, because the authors represent the opinion of their ethnic group and time. Nation in family and family in nation. The type of patriotic town family, example of Dr. Václav Staněk's family.

Diploma thesis deals with theme of family in Czech patriotic circles in the 19th century, example of family of Václav Staněk, Doctor of Medicine and patriot. Václav Staněk was a friend of Josef Frič and František Ladislav Čelakovský, their families were very close. While Fritč's and Čelakovský's families appear very often in different works about 19th century, Staněk's family was almost forgot. This thesis deals with public activities of the family, in the time before the revolution 1848 it's the Czech "salon" which was also one of the first platforms for women interested in education and during the revolution in 1848 - 1849 the engagement of Václav Staněk at parliament in Vienna and Kroměříž. Thorough attention is paid to the family connections among members of the family, especially to relationships between wife and husband and relationships among parents and children. The source is rich and yet not used correspondence of the family which allows insight to the political as well to the family business.

Prof. Rudolf Jedlička (1869-1926) and the medical and social institutions bound up with his activities

Rudolf Jedlička belongs to the most important Czech doctors of the beginning of the 20th century. After finishing his studies he engaged, under the influence of his favourite professor Karel Maydl, in surgery. Nevertheless he was very soon interested in X-ray science and radiology - the science branches, which were just newly being formed, and whose pioneer in the central Europe he became. Jedlička was often consulted as a diagnostic and operator thanks to his many-sided medical skills. He connected his life with the Faculty of Medicine of the Czech Charles-Ferdinand University, respectively Charles University, where he was engaged as an educationalist - creator of so called Jedlička school, which became bearer of his medical heritage. He reached the top of his career in 1921, when he was designated as regular professor of surgery and simultaneously head of the II. Clinic of Surgery. Rudolf Jedlička did not limit his activities only to medical theory and practice, but he was also initiator and organizer of many medical and social projects, the most important of which was the foundation of Prague sanatorium and neighbouring Jedlička foundation. Leaving of Czechoslovak democracy giants; comparison of media images of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk and Václav Havel death and funeral in Czech Press

Diploma thesis "Leaving of Czechoslovak democracy giants; comparison of media images of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk's and Vaclav Havel's death and funeral in Czech Press" aims to compare the media images of the presidents' death and funeral in broadsheet and tabloid newspapers of that time. In this matter, media analyzed the lives of these great personalities, their work, political views, their acceptance and renown abroad, their merits and their critical reception as well. The study itself is divided into two main parts. The first one being the theoretical part informs about the political and social context of the time in which Tomas Garrigue Masaryk and Vaclav Havel lived and worked and it discusses their personalities in more details. Furthermore, the methodology used in the thesis is included in this section as well, representing and explaining the method of the media research. In the second practical part, the thesis provides the characteristics of the chosen broadsheet and tabloid newspapers - Lidove noviny, Poledni list and Blesk. By using qualitative analysis the thesis seeks to determine how media presented the presidents at that time. Changes in the Portrayal of the Velvet Revolution within the Czech Cinemathography

My thesis is focused on exploration of the portrayal of the Velvet Revolution within Czech Cinematography. I am examining this problematic through the theory of the collective memory. In particular I am using a methodological concept developed by Irena Řehořová in her study Cultural Memory and Film: How the Image of Post-War Displacement in Czech Film Has Changed. I have chosen three films - each representing one period of time and by conducting a qualitative content analysis I am trying to identify the key means of expression that are used to represent the concept of the Velvet Revolution during each of those particular periods of time and what overall image of the Velvet Revolution creators of the movies are trying to show to their viewers. At the same time, I am focusing on the reaction of professional critics and regular viewers to check how the Czech public reacts to the representations of the Velvet revolution shown in the films. Re-presentation of August 1968 in film production

The thesis focuses on the connection between social memory and film reproduction of the past. Through selected examples of film production, the thesis explores how filmmakers dealt with the theme of August 68 and how their approach to the subject changed. The aim of the thesis is to explore "images" through which the film representation construct the events of August 68 and how they are or are not accepted by the public. Selected films for analysis were Pelíšky (1999), Anglické jahody (2008) and Jan Palach (2018). The analysis of the films was carried out by a qualitative content analysis taken from the work Cultural Memory and Film: How the Image of Postwar Displacement in Czech Film by Irena Řehořová. Film representations are explored through six categories: film form, themes and stories, the social world of film, cultural-historical memory, the seen X the unseen, the reception at the time of introduction and now. The analysis suggested that with increasing distance from the Velvet Revolution, the films began to criticize more the behaviour of Czech society during the occupation. The topic of the thesis is the library of Josef Svátek (1835 - 1897) who was not only author of historical fiction but also editor and historician. The thesis is based on Svatek's coresspondence, period magazines and his own library. The thesis is focused on Svatek as editor and historician and the attention is paid to not yet published fact about Svatek's life. Svatek's library is the subject of analysis which allows us to see how the library itself was effected by Svatek's interests, hobbies and duties.
